12Oct2006

Melissa,

Please forgive my unsolicited intrusion...

You linked Quantonics' web page on What is Intelligence?.

We encountered Paul Pietsch at IU who authored ShuffleBrain. Text of ShuffleBrain is available free there.

Unsure whether you will see Pietsch's work in an acceptable (to you) light. However, Pietsch showed that salamander brains can be "shuffled." His research 'results' support a Bohm and Pribram meme of "mind as holographic." To some degree also, Kafatos and Nadeau's memes of a Conscious Universe.

Pietsch says this, "Indeterminacy is the principal feature of intelligence." Of course, that aligns an Heisenbergian assumption of quantum uncertainty. It upgrades and updates our previous remarks on intelligence something like this "Quantum uncertainty is a principal feature of (everywhere associative included-middle holographic) intelligence."

Kind regards,

Quantonic Questions & Answers

Question

Answer
 Jan99

What is intelligence and can you locate it? Why?

Quantonics' view is that bases of intelligence are actually Bases of Judgment. Latter begs quantum uncertainty as real quantum intelligence - Doug - 9Jan2006.

1. Dan Jystad — I must say up front that my terminology is VERY limited compared to the scope that I have seen just quickly browsing the site. I would hope that any infringements on the use of the vocabulary I choose are taken as those of a neophyte.

Intelligence falls into the same type of trap of subject object duality as quality. As soon as you try to define it as a physical entity, electrical patterns created from chemical changes in the brain and you try and recreate it outside of an actual functioning brain........uhhhhh no dice. And some would even attest that some functioning brains have no discernible forms of intelligence. And then you run into trouble with who gets to decide what discernible means ...........and round and round and round.

Anyway. Finding ways to define it without using the terminology which DESCRIBES but does not define, intelligence, its the bootstrap thing all over again.

For me, intelligence is that wonderfully elusive state of being where you get to make "sense" of the things around you. All of this is relative to the individual, Kind of an Ayn Rand relative morals type of deal. I guess you could make a case for intelligence as any type of orderly processing of environmental information, but that is not nearly as much fun.

Locate it? Kind of like grabbing the wind. Sure, you can make a wind tunnel of tests and outputs like the smoke trails to mark the wind, but that is just a mark and not the wind itself.

Thanks for the question. I don't get to exercise it like that nearly
enough!

Dan

2. bar — Uh....this is a tricky one.

I think that intelligence is evolving, always changing, always
progressing, never ending, dynamic, explosive, powerful. Intelligence used to be and is measured by certain tests such as the IQ test. The only problem with the test is that it is derived by a certain level of intelligence, and there is always more intelligence to be found. Intelligence tends to be quantified. Who is doing the quantifying? In fact, when one quantifies intelligence it becomes a static event. Intelligence is ABSOLUTELY dynamic, not quantifiable..not static. So you say, who is the most intelligent being?....answer....unknown. Better yet, we humans possess such small finite intellect..we are constantly
searching......

Can you locate it? No

Why? It is everywhere...constantly swirling, waving, rushing,
enlightening, gorging, fulfilling, ever changing, never stopping....

Intelligence.....a wonderful, powerful, dynamic, non-definable,
enlightening, ever changing event. (Our red italics.)

3. Doug — What is intelligence and can you locate it? Why?

This question provided an opportunity to introduce and espouse some of the Quantonics/MoQ fundamentals, so it is longer than previous answers.

I want to give two answers from two different perspectives:

    • A classical answer from the usual SOM perspective
    • A Quantonic answer from a quantum/MoQ perspective

A Classical Answer:

The classical view says that one may define, locate, and measure intelligence objectively.

Classically intelligence is one property of mind whose locus is an individual human (anthropocentric view) brain. Brainless, there is no mind. Mindless, there is no intelligence.

Brain is the objective source of subjective mind whose intelligence may be either subjective or objective depending upon one’s adherence to formal objective thought and propositional logic, i.e., reason. If one adheres the left of reason one's thoughts are objective and offer potential to know absolute truth. Universal truths are found and worshiped in the Church of Reason. If one's mind prances in the right of intuition, rhetoric, art, aesthetics, etc., the Church of Reason indicts such behavior as subjective.

Classical intelligence is one’s ability to accumulate and use information and knowledge in one's brain. The brain is a classical object. It is local. It is closed except for the senses, plus physical and verbal expression. One’s intelligence is local to one’s own mind. One’s knowledge is local and use of that knowledge may be local or nonlocal depending upon context and available classical technology (e.g. isolation vis-à-vis groups, telecommunications, networks, etc.). Classical space-time limits access to local sources of classical knowledge. Light speed and distance limit access to local classical knowledge.

(Classical intelligence uses formal dialectic almost exclusively. Its dialectic is a formal axiom set which keeps its practitioners in a classical box of reason. Dialectic axiom-based rules, principles and 'laws,' keep practitioners in their box. Thus all practitioners trap their objective intellects in that one box. It is monolithic, homogeneous, analytic, deterministic, closed, and sees analytic change as temporal motion. To classical intelligence change is motion of existing things or objects. This classical analogue of change is innately incapable of explaining and making public emergent change and immergent change. So, in that regard, classical intelligence is stuck in a global 'state of being.' That stuckness blinds classical intelligence to a greater reality of becoming, unbecoming, and isobeing. This stuckness is a key disabler for development of emergent systems. Learn QTMs to escape CTMs' stuckness and formal traps. 12Nov2000 Doug.)

A Quantonic Answer:

The Quantonic view says intelligence is a shared value of the multiverse. Shared intelligence is nonseparable, nonisolable, nonlocal, immeasurable, and describable but undefinable.

Quantonic intelligence is a highly evolved Static Pattern of Value (SPoV) which arises from complex aggregates of quantons. Intelligence is more highly evolved than social, social more than biological, and biological more than inorganic SPoVs.

Quantons are the stuff of reality. (Also see fluxors.) Using Pirsig's MoQ metaphor of reality, Dynamic Quality or DQ represents unlatched quantons of reality. In other words DQ's unlatched quantons represent the unknown, the source of all possibilities. Pirsig's Static Quality or SQ represents latched quantons of reality. SQ is the known, everything we know, and everything which exists. You, the multiverse, the Earth, mind, matter, intuition, language, intelligence, philosophy, music, art, law, science, ideas, memes, viruses, worms, stuff… Intelligence is highly evolved SQ. (More recently, we developed a metaphor of mind and intelligence as a quantum stage.)

But what do we know about the interrelationship of both DQ and SQ? First, it is always changing. We say, "Flux is crux!" We symbolize that interrelationship in several equivalent ways:

  • Quanton(DQ,SQ) - DQ and SQ are a quanton, the reality quanton(unknown,known).
  • DQ SQ - The Quantonic interrelationship of commingling and interpenetration.
  • < DQ | SQ > - Dirac's quantum science notation for reality using DQ and SQ.
  • etc.

All quantons are both quantum cohesive and individually autonomous. (See our review of Mae-wan Ho's, the Rainbow and the Worm. Search on, 'autonomy.')

So Quantonic intelligence is both quantum cohesive and individually autonomous. Every sentient being shares cohesive intelligence as a quantum stage! Every sentient being provides an autonomous nexus concentration of cohesive intelligence.

Quantonic intelligence is both autonomous and cohesive. Autonomous intelligence is one sentient being's ability to leverage self as an SQ change agent tapping all of quanton(DQ,SQ).

Quantonic intelligence is both superluminal and-both local and nonlocal. It is nonseparable, nonisolable, and nonmeasurable (in the classical sense). That's it!

Thanks to Dan and 'bar' for their great answers for January. We look forward to hearing from more of you next month.

Doug.
